Peewink Mountain

This walk is along a one-lane dirt road through open woodland and grassland, past rock piles and towers and views in all directions. There are intriguing branches in the road, at 0.5 mi. to the right (332A), at 1.2 mi. to the left, at 1.6 mi. to the right (332F) and to the right again (332C) -- obvious opportunities to explore some of the corners on this long E-W ridge. After 1.9 miles, the main track (332) dead-ends at an abandoned mine. I turned south and bushwhacked up about 1/4 mi. to the rocky top of Peewink Mt. There is a nice view of Sugarloaf Mt. to the NE and the snowy (in December) Indian Peaks to the W. Great plumes of powdery snow were blowing off those peaks in flowing arcs.

Getting There

Drive W up Boulder Canyon. Turn right on Sugarloaf Rd.; 9.1 mi. to Peewink Mt. Rd. (across from Gordon Gulch, rd. 332 on the trail map above). Park on the side of the road. This is a 1.9 mile walk, or in dry weather, a two-wheel drive to the dead end of the road. Click on the thumbnails above for parts of my trail map and an old topo map. A trail map for all of Boulder County is available from the Boulder Area Trails Coalition (find link on home page).
