The Gay Divorcee, 1934

Fred and Ginger are dancing The Continental. They are in a Left Half Open Position and are partially wrapped.

On the right, they are in Half Open Position.

Facing

They might be thinking about a Reverse Underarm Turn.

Acknowledge

In Half Open Position, they exhibit wonderful connection between partners. Although the position is open, their bodies are oriented toward each other. One of our teachers regularly reminds us to keep our belly buttons aimed at our partners. They are gazing into each other's eyes. In Open, lead hands are not joined, but Ginger's right arm is curved toward Fred. They are clearly dancing together.

In this shot, from Night and Day, he has politely returned her to her seat and is saying, "Thank you for a lovely dance."

I'm being facetious. Actually, he wooed her powerfully, wordlessly, and she is stunned.

Here is the same scene with Clair Luce. These three photos are from the play, Gay Divorce, 1932.
